Why Grabando Aves?

Many of the bird species that inhabit the Neotropics still have few recordings of their vocalizations in global archives. In most countries, less than 45% of species have the 150 recordings needed to train AI tools such as Merlin Sound ID. This gap limits both scientific research and access to bird identification technologies for millions of people.

Grabando Aves seeks to change that reality. We want to bring together and strengthen a community of recordists to build a more complete sound archive, enabling better identification tools, supporting acoustic monitoring, and advancing our knowledge of the birds of Latin America and the Caribbean. Every bird recording uploaded to eBird and archived in the Macaulay Library directly contributes to these goals.

Our mission

• Promote regional and continental challenges to document bird sounds
• Connect and highlight a growing network of recordists
• Provide resources to local partners to promote sound recording in their community

How to participate

Sound recording workshop in Argentina

For recordists and birders
You only need your phone or recorder. Every recording counts: from the most common backyard song to rare species during your travels. Upload your sounds to eBird, check out our tips for recording sounds, and follow progress and rankings on our dashboard for recordists.

For organizations
You can become an official partner of the project by promoting activities in your region: workshops, recording outings, campaigns, or local challenges. We have resources and materials that can help you. Meet all our partners here.

For the whole community
Help spread the word, join recording challenges, explore our online resources, or attend local workshops. Whether you’re an experienced recordist or just starting out, there’s always a place for you.
